Brandon's First Loose Tooth

Well I knew we would have this eventually. I got a phone call at work today. It was Arion. "Mom, Brandon has a loose tooth and is freaking out". This was punctuated by the screaming and crying in the back ground. He then proceeds to put Brandon on the phone. I try to calm him down. No go there. I explain that he will get a new tooth. Nope. I tell him the tooth fairly will bring him money. Strike three. I try the old your growing to a big boy and need to get new big boy teeth. OK, still crying. Arion gets back on and I tell him to try to calm him down and that I am on my way home in 5 minutes. Good thing is was at the end of the day. I get home and all is fine. Brandon is not crying anymore. We talk a little about the tooth. His opinion is that he likes the teeth he has. Doesn't need new ones. And that fairy, keep that bitch out of his room. OK, didn't use those words. I thought we were OK till Jim gave him a cookie after dinner. That mean chocolate cookie made his tooth bleed and it started all over again. The crying, screaming, blood. You get the picture. Thankfully I was reading one of the blogs I love to read and she had put in a video. I played it thinking it might distract him and it worked. By the end he was laughing and forgot about the tooth for now. Thanks Dawn, I owe you.

That Little Voice

Have you ever heard that little voice inside your head tell you "you better do this or you'll be sorry". Well it happened yesterday and boy am I glad I listened. It had snowed the night before and it was really cold. I mean I woke up, turned on the news are they were talking about it was 9 degrees and there would be a high of 24. Oh boy. When I was getting dressed for the day, something told me I better put on my long johns. I don't normally wear them to work. The office is generally warm and I have a space heater under my desk just in case. But I put them on along with an extra undershirt and thought I could always take them off if I got to hot. Better safe than sorry, right??? Well about 1:15 pm we lost power at work. That's right, no power, no heat, no emergency space heater. I called my boss to ask "how cold is too cold" and she seemed to think I should just man my post. Yeah, I don't see her sitting in a cold office. By the time the power came back on, about an hour and a half later the office was about 62 and I was wearing my coat. I was really glad I put on the extra clothes. Lesson learned: more is definitely better.

Mr. Cuchi Rat

Now I know that I normally don't give out names of teachers or stuff like that, but I feel the need to talk about the rat. At Brandon's school there is a behaviour specialist called Mr. Cuchi. Brandon has visited Mr. Cuchi on occasion when having a bad day. For Brandon's birthday he gave Brandon a Beany Baby Rat. It has been named Mr. Cuchi Rat. I know. Laugh all you like. Everyone looks at me like we're crazy. Brandon now loves this rat. He sleeps with it and takes it all around the house. I never figured that a rat would be a beloved toy.

My Birthday Wish

When I was little, I always wished that it would snow on my birthday. Well yesterday was my birthday and we went out to dinner. We had a lovely dinner because for half the dinner we were the only one's there. We got to sit by the fireplace, which was great. When we came out it was snowing. It looked beautiful. Of course this morning we have a two hour delay so I will be late for work.

Swimming Success

Last night was the kids swimming class. I have been trying to talk Lauren into swimming away from the wall without holding on to anyone or anything. I knew she could but was to afraid too. I had mentioned it to her teacher last week, but still no go. Last night I think he was a determined as I was that she do it. By the end of the class, he had her swimming to the rope and back (about 10 yards, both ways) without any help. It was really more of a dog paddle than the crawl stroke, but very impressive. She was very proud of herself. As we congratulated her in the car, Brandon started talking about him putting his head under water. I must have missed it, but if he did that would have been a first for him too.

Peas Glorious Peas

YES, the other day was not a fluke. Last night we had peas again. This time I was able to put some on his plate and with some encouragement, Brandon ate. Not a lot mine you, but a couple. He ate one for every chop. Yes, we used the Jackie Chan Marbles line again. Hey whatever works right? So, which vegetable to I tackle next.

Cowpots

Yesterday I spent most of the day in bed. I seemed to be the next in line to get a stomach virus that is going around. Of course that didn't keep the kids from visiting me and wanting to snuggle and watch TV. One of the shows we watched was Dirty Jobs. One part of the show was on Cowpots. If you haven't see the show, the host goes places and does jobs that are dirty. This one was about a farmer that takes cow dung, removes that liquid, compost, and eventually turns it into flower pots. Kind of cool, the pots can be planted with the flower and feed the plant. I was trying to explain to Brandon what the man was doing in simple terms. After I told him that the farmer made pots out of cow poop, Brandon had me laughing. He started saying "That not right, that's disgusting". "That's gross. That not right".
Upsetting Comments

On Thursday, I got up as usual and wrote a post in the morning. After I had got the last kid off I was cleaning up the living room and heard the computer ding. I had a little time and figured I check and see if I got a e-mail or something and what I got was very unexpected. It was a comment to the post I had just written, except not really a comment ON my post. Someone had left a porno comment about meeting girls with a link to a web site. Took me a minute to delete, so I hope no one saw it. My point is that I found it upsetting. What kind of a sickco leaves a porno comment on a blog mainly about learning disabled kids. If you are out there, your comments are not wanted, needed or required. Thank you. To everyone else, you may see a change is the comment box that will make it harder for spammers to comment. Please feel free to leave comments whenever you like.

Captain Planet Globes & Jackie Chan Marbles

When Arion was 5 he wouldn't eat peas. Then one day we told him that they were Captain Planet Globes. Amazing, he ate them and has ever since. Well last night Jim decided to try it on Brandon. You see Brandon rarely eats any vegetables besides raw carrots every night. At first Jim told him they were Captain Planet Globes. I laughed and said that he didn't know who that was. Jim thought a minute and than said that they were Jackie Chan Marbles. He built it up by telling Brandon they would make him strong and improve his karate chop. At first I didn't think it worked. Brandon then told Jim to look at a monkey across the room (a game at dinner for stealing food off someones plate) and then he took a pea, just one, but his first in a long while. We were all amazed when he actually ate it. Using this method, we actually got him to eat 3. Yahoo. There might be hope for him eating green vegetables yet. By the way, this picture is of Arion at 5. Brandon and Arion look very much alike for having different fathers.

I'm Just Here for the Wax Ring

On Friday, my sister Mary called. She needed my help. About 2 years ago I replaced the wax ring in her toilet and it seems it needed it again. Funny, it should last longer than that, but, no problem. You see Saturday is January 13th. It is the anniversary of my Mother's death and sometimes we talk or get together. Friday night I pick up about 2 wax rings remembering that we needed 2 last time and I'm all set. Jim had some things to do so I took the kids and headed over in the morning. One thing you have to understand about Mary's house is that it's about 100 years old and her X-husband Jerry-rigged everything when he fixed it. We knew from last time that this toilet was no exception. There's no flange (the metal piece that holds the toilet to the floor. He put the screws thru a piece of plywood and that's how he bolted the toilet to the floor. Anyway, I get there and we pull the toilet. That's when things went bad. We knew we were in trouble. The wood was rotted and the wax ring wasn't sealing to the toilet. OK, need to go to the hardware store and do this right. We need wood and a flange. We take pictures of the pipe. Remember, 100 years old. Cast metal. Bent funny. Not good. We meet a plumber friend at the store who gave us some advise. The problem is tools. We don't have what we need. We need to replace more floor than the patch dumby X put in. As we're driving home we discuss the problem. We need Rick, my brother the carpenter. He has the tools. So we call and he says he'll be over around dinner. We pull what we can (just the patch). Clean up and clear out the space, and then start on her dishwasher (we also needed to fix that). Oh, I forgot, when we pulled the patch, we realized we also need to replace some of the floor under that patch. Those boards were also rotted. Rick suggested we replace a larger piece of sub floor.

OK, long story short (too late I know). It's Monday, Mary has to take off work. Borrowed tools and trucks. Rick has replacing most of the sub floor (not just a small piece) and some of the floor under that. Mary pulled all the old flooring and is putting the new tiles in today. They even had to pull her old cast iron tub to work under there. She is practically redoing the whole bathroom when all we had planned was the wax ring. During the day, I kept saying I'm just came here for the wax ring. Hey Mary, want some paint to finish the job? HAHAHA LOL

Dr. Mike was Wrong

OK Dr. Mike, you are in trouble now. Last time Brandon had a splinter you said that we could just leave the next one in and it would work it's way out. WRONG. Last night at dinner Brandon showed us a splinter in his thumb. I gave it a little try to get it out at bed time, but couldn't get it with my nails so I left it in. This morning it was swollen and infected. Big, red and full of puss. So once again we fought the fight and I think it is out. Brandon had a huge fit, again. All better now. Wish I knew were he was getting them. It must be on the playground at school.

It's a Conspiracy I Tell You

Yesterday, after a long and stressful day at work, I think the kids decided to try to put me over the edge. I got home to see that Jim was still at work. I needed to cook dinner. Not much choice, because I needed to go shopping. I started trying to defrost something and that's when the kids decided that it was craft time. Lauren wanted to work with her new jewel kit and make headbands or jewelery. Brandon wanted to paint with some new paint and sign he got for Christmas. My first thought was it would keep them busy so I could get dinner together. Not that easy. First I had to open everything and find newspaper. Oops, get Brandon's sleeves up. The glue was clogged, work on that. Brandon is done and now wants more to do. Someone find some paper. Lauren's talking about what colors to use. After a while I thought I was going to loose it. I was getting no where with dinner and it was now 6:00 pm. I call Jim and he ain't coming home to help. Arion was hiding, even though I know he heard me. Finally I said . . . ENOUGH. Craft time was over. I have to cook dinner or everyone will starve. We finally ate, late and played at getting Brandon to eat (as normal). Jim got home just as we were cleaning up. I was so tired, it didn't go shopping. I guess we're going out tonight or getting take-out. Lesson - Dinner time is not craft time.

The Things We Teach Our Kids

Last night was one of those nights. I was tired. I asked Brandon to bring me his backpack so I could see how he did at school and he started to go out to the living room and Arion attacked him. The two started to wrestle and yell and the norm. I yelled, "Arion leave him alone so he can bring me his damn back pack" OK, as soon as it was out of my mouth I knew I shouldn't have said it. Brandon yells back "It not a damn back pack, it a good back pack". Of course Arion starts laughing about what I just taught him. Like I said, it was one of those nights.

Time to Get Back to Genealogy

One of the things I do for me is research the family genealogy. I haven't done so in a very long time. Lately, my interests have been peaked again. I really have let it go. Things have been so busy that I just don't take the time. I've decided that I still have work to do on my Mothers side. Most of my work has been on my Fathers side. I've even gone to the archives in NJ to pull birth and death certificates. I usually go for my birthday and it's about that time of year. Well I think it time to make a trip to the land of Pennsylvania Dutch. My records really only go back to 1822 and I'm sure I can do better than that. I am now setting a new goal. I will trace the Hahs clan back to when they entered America. I'll let you know how it goes.

Arion's Senior Portrait

We got Arion's senior portrait today. So now you can see what I was talking about some blogs back. The one is a wonderful pictures that show him and a fine young man that anyone would be proud to call their child and the other is the true Arion in all his glory. Don't get me wrong. I am very proud of the man Arion is becoming. It's just that sometimes I like to see a more dignified picture. Although there is something to see about a picture that you can use against him 40 years down the road.

Noise Toys

There's a thing in my family about giving toys that make noise. It is done to drive the parent crazy. When it happens there is usually some sort of retribution in kind to the other siblings child to drive the offending parent crazy as well. There have been some jewels in the past. Last year comes to mind with the snare drum and cymbals that my brother gave Brandon. I thought I had made it through a Christmas without any of my children being given one of these toys. AU CONTRAIRE MON FRERE. Mary, you are in big trouble. You see the RC car you so innocently bought Brandon is having it's classification changed to NOISY. The motor is quite noisy and then there's the noise when it hits a wall and flips. Thanks Mary.
Brandon's New Teacher

When I got home yesterday, Brandon was so excited. "Mommy, I went high." "Harry, he teach me". Now I could have gone to his back pack and read his communication book, which did mention what he was talking about. By the way, a communication book is a great way to talk back and forth with your child's teacher. Anyway, I wanted to make Brandon TELL me what happened. Here are the clues, it's an easy one. He went high. He leaned back and his legs went up. Yep, Harry (Brandon's best friend from school) was teaching Brandon to swing on the swing by himself. This is something that Brandon has problems with. That whole motor control thing. Anyway, the book says he was doing pretty good.

Uncle Mike's Magic Pockets

On New Year's Day we went to my brother Ricks house. At one point in the day Brandon came over to Rick and pushed a blue bouncy ball into his pocket. We didn't pay much attention (you know, just one of those Brando's World things) until he came back a couple of minutes later and pulled the ball back out again. Brandon's comment was that it didn't change color. He seemed disappointed and tried to put it back into Rick's pocket again. Took me about 30 seconds to remember what he was up to. Last Thanksgiving Uncle Mike (my other brother) had put a ball in his pocket and then pulled out one of another color. He then did a bunch of magic tricks for Brandon. We had to explain to Brandon that Uncle Rick doesn't have magic pockets and he would have to wait for Uncle Mike to make it work. Be prepared Mike. His memory is better than an elephant's.

This Year In Review

This morning I started thinking of all that happened this year. It goes so fast I feel like I'm just treading water. I thought I would recap to see my progress.

With Brandon we started the year with the new diagnosis (which actually came in November of 05) and started trying to get someone to take it seriously. We had a 6 months fight with the school district and got him in a great school for kids with special needs. In the last 4 months of the year, I think he has made more progress than in the other 8. We also started Brandon in group sports - Tee-ball and swimming. We had great results with both and hope to continue.

Lauren has been a challenge. Well not with her, she continues to work hard. This year was my year to attack on her behalf. In the spring of the year I tried to get the school to understand that there was a problem. This is something that will have to continue on into 2007. I still don't have the results from the testing being done by the school. More and more I have come to see the school district as my adversary and not my partner. Lauren also started in group sports. She became a great 3rd baseman and has concurred her fear of putting her face under water and jumping off the side of the pool. She also became a Brownie and has started earning badges.

Now for Arion. What can you say. Same old Arion. This year he began to understand that he could get those straight A's in school without to much work. I fear it might be to late for that scholarship. I plan to start looking for something to help pay for college in 2007. Arion also had surgery this year. We have another appointment tomorrow. Things are not going well. I don't think it is healing right. We'll see what the doctor says. I think I'm going into this one. Not like I don't see his butt when I change the bandage. This was also the year that Arion joined the work force. He had had summer jobs before, but this year he worked part-time at nights and on week-ends. He also started taking karate, which has been great for his health.

For me, this was the year I went from loving my job to hating it to tolerating it. You see I need the hours, great hours. They moved around all the supers and I got the bad one. I complained so much about him not doing his job, I was told to stop complaining or lose my job. I came to the conclusion that if they don't care, why should I. Not the best attitude, but what can I do.

As for families, Jim sister had another surgery and we hope that will hold her for awhile. We continue to look for a new home and hope to move in 2007. My sister continues to fight her ex to get him to pay his child support. The bastard owes her so much money and has no attention of paying. He has found about every loop hole there is. I hope is time is running out and the courts will finally make him pay something substantial.

Well that about wraps it up. I guess it was a busy year. I hope everyone has a good new year.
