Starting the Fight Again

Here I go again. And let's not mention that I almost feel bad for the school for me doing it. I do guilt well. I have made a phone call to try to get Lauren retested for a second opinion. I am going to have a meeting with the two teachers on Monday and following that I will be requesting an addendum for her IEP. Not that they follow it anyway. The special ed teacher has written in her communication book all of twice since the beginning of the year. Her IEP says daily. Every time I get a note home from Lauren's regular teacher it seems a bit snotty. I try to ask Lauren if the teacher read her the test that she took and she can't remember. How do I handle this???? If she can't remember and they don't do it then how do I get them to do it. The agenda book is a disaster. She can't read what's on the board to write down. Copying it from the board is hard because of the working memory problems. All she does is write down WS every day and hopes it right. When I question her about it she just cries. More guilt. I sent the school psychologist a e-mail to which there was no response. What do I do now. Well here it is. I will meet with the teachers and tell what is up. Change your ways or things are going to get hot. I have been trying to get an advocate to go with me when I go in for the IEP change. Hopefully someone they find scary. Get her retested and get the specialist input as to what should be in the IEP. Find a way to be sure they are doing what they are supposed to. Maybe the special ed teacher should initial the test to show she saw it. I don't know. We shall see.

Great for you trying to get an advocate!

When my son was in kindergarten there was a Special Ed coordinator that was a total ass. My son was not getting the services he needed and we caught them numerous times not giving him the services he had listed on his IEP. We got an advocate and things went much better.

What people don't realize is there are two very good reasons for an advocate. First, an advocate will not only advocate for getting the proper services, but will also tell parents if they are asking for too much. So special ed staff actually like them because they view them as more impartial.

Second, if a school isn't supplying the necessary services they are much less likely to keep doing it in front of a witness. When I had documented the incomplete services by myself the special ed staff just started doing more to hide it. Once an advocate became involved, the special ed staff actually corrected their errant ways.

In my opinion everyone should have an advocate. It's the best decision we ever made and the special ed staff has actually been less hostile since we started using one.

Side note: I'm so glad to hear you are fighting for your children's services. It sucks to have to constantly fight for services but it has to be done. Schools hate giving extra services and children that don't have strong parental advocates suffer greatly. I completely understand how tiring it is to constantly fight special ed and regualr ed teachers, but it must be done. You are not a bitch for demanding your daughter gets a adequate education, you are a great parent.

Stay strong and good luck.
